The town of Sasan Gir is situated in the Indian state of Gujarat, directly between the well-known Gir National Park and the historical city of Junagadh. The Asiatic lion, commonly referred to as the Indian lion, is found in this city.
The settlement of Sasan Gir is easily reachable via a variety of modes of transportation. Around 165 kilometres from Sasan Gir, in Rajkot, is the closest airport. Junagadh Railway Station is well-connected to all the major cities in the country and is the nearest railway station. Sasan Gir is about 53 km from Junagadh. Public buses, as well as private sleeper buses, ply between Junagadh and Sasan Gir.
The Maldharis, a word used to describe the several Muslim and Hindu pastoral communities in the region, is found in Sasan Gir. The Maldhars live in traditional settlements called nesses and tend to Jafrabadi buffaloes, Gir cows and other animals. Some of them also raise camels, sheep and goats. Among the most famous Maldhars of Gir is the Sorathi Rabari.
Siddis Gir is a community of African origin. It is believed that they arrived as mercenaries, slaves and workers from African countries. The Siddis became powerful generals, some of them even becoming rulers. In Sasan Gir, there are Siddi villages, famous for their dances and other performances, and Nagarshi Pir in nearby Jhambur is a large shrine of the Siddi community.
The village has both the traditional house made of bricks and tiled roofs and a large gate that has a small door that is used for the owners of the house to enter and exit. There are also modern houses painted in bright colours.
The main attraction of this town is the Gir National Park, and to visit this sanctuary, it is necessary to obtain a permit which is distributed in the national park itself. These permits are only issued once in the morning and once in the afternoon, and only a limited number of permits are issued each day.
