Even in today’s fast-paced world, where medicine and technology are progressing, there is a lack of basic sexual education. People blindly follow myths and taboos without going deep into the root cause of reproductive issues. This is due to a lack of scientific knowledge, which, in turn, has a negative influence on women’s emotional mindset, lifestyle, and, most importantly, physical health. In this article we will be discussing deeply about the myths and facts about the reproductive health of women.
Dr Divya Vora, an obstetrician and Dr Mridula Raghav, a gynaecologist and a fertility specialist, busted some common myths regarding reproductive health.
Women’s weight and getting pregnant: This has been one of the most common myths believed by people for ages. Being underweight or overweight leads to infertility. But the fact is, it has nothing to do with a woman’s weight, and these kinds of women have an uneventful pregnancy and conceive naturally. However, as per experts, following unhealthy lifestyles like smoking and vaping can affect the fertility of women.
Twin babies born only through IVF: Many people believe that twins are born only through the IVF process. But Dr. Raghav brushes out this myth, saying that twin babies can occur naturally, too, and the chances are even greater if you have PCOS or a family history of twins.
Women shed impure blood during Periods: This myth has been going on for ages. But the fact is that menstruation is a healthy and natural process. It actually prepares a woman’s body for pregnancy. According to Dr. Vora, period blood does not have any impurities or toxins.
Birth control pills cause Cancer: Dr Vora busts this myth saying millions of women take these pills and are completely safe. There is no scientific proof to prove that these oral contraceptive pills cause cancer. In addition, these pills actually control the risk of certain cancers.
Douching cleans the Vagina: This statement is just a myth. As per Dr. Raghav, the vagina is a self-cleaning organ. And douching does not clean it but instead increases the risk of infection.
Women cannot become pregnant while on Period: This is not true. A woman can get pregnant during her period. She might feel that she is bleeding, but in reality, it could be bleeding due to ovulation.
Talking about women’s health care, it is essential to visit the doctor so you can dispel myths and taboos associated with it.
