Mamukkoya, a veteran Malayalam actor, died on Wednesday in a private hospital. He was hospitalised in Kozhikode after experiencing a brain haemorrhage and cardiac arrest. He was 76.
Mamukkoya was taken to the hospital after collapsing on Monday at Wandoor in Malappuram, the site of a football event.
Following a time on the stage, Mamukkoya made his debut on the silver screen in 1979’s Anyarude Bhoomi. He continued to work as an actor in more than 400 films, including Gandhinagar 2nd Street, Sandesham, Nadodikattu, Vadakkunokkiyantram, Chakoram, Ramji Rao Speaking, Innathe Chintha Visheyam, and Perumazhakkalam, among others, demonstrating his versatility in both humorous and character parts. Even in 2004 and 2008, he was given a Kerala State Award.
The most recent appearance of Mamukkoya was in Sulaikha Manzil, which debuted on April 21.
He is survived by his wife and 4 children.
Celebrities and colleagues of Mamukkoya paid tribute to him, sharing a picture of him on Instagram and Facebook.
Mammootty shared a photo of Mamukkoya on Facebook and paid his condolences to the actor and his family.
Kunchacko Boban posted his condolences on Instagram. He wrote, “Another legend bids Adieu leaving some fond memories…………MAMMOOKKOYA CHETTAN……”
Dileep wrote, “With a big smile, you loved me like a friend and brother. You will remain the sultan of laughter.”
Prithviraj Sukumaran, who acted with Mamukkoya in the 2021 film Kuruthi, posted on Instagram, “Rest in peace Maamukkoya Sir! Had the absolute privilege of sharing screen space with you multiple times. But to see you unleash #Moosa in #KURUTHI at such close quarters will be a memory that I cherish forever! #Legend 🙏❤️🙏.”
