2018 Movie Review: Jude Anthany Joseph’s Recreation of Kerala Floods is Painful

By Rinshi Ansari, May 6, 2023

Kerala experienced one of the worst floods ever in 2018. The victims of the floods and those who were directly affected by them are still suffering. Some people lost their lives, their homes, and their means of support. But when everyone worked together to protect humanity, none of these things mattered.

Regardless of their differences (race, religion, or socioeconomic status), people came together to aid one another in overcoming the disaster. In his most recent movie, 2018, director Jude Anthany Joseph aimed to capture the same. And he’s been successful.

Let us go through the 2018 Movie Review and find out why it’s worth watching at least once.

2018 starts in the village of Aruvikkulam, where we meet the locals and learn about their daily lives. Anoop (Tovino Thomas) quit the Army with a forged medical certificate so he could travel to Dubai and work there to support himself. There is a family of fishermen made up of Lal, Narain, and Asif.

Asif Ali wants to pursue acting, whereas Lal and Narein’s characters are proud fishermen. Numerous characters include a pregnant woman, the parents of a child with special needs, a blind person, and more.

The daily routines of the many characters in the community are shown in the first half. But soon, we watch as the state is being pounded by rain and how quickly the situation deteriorates. We are transported to their reality and feel powerless as Kerala begins to flood.

We are uncertain of what will happen next at various points in the movie. We are affected by watching the events, whether it’s a pregnant woman being evacuated, Asif Ali’s character discovering a snake during a rescue, or the fisherman stepping up to help stranded people.

While 2018 occasionally veers towards the theatrical, overall, it succeeds. Technically, sound filmmaking is what gives the movie its immersive quality. The film is a monument to the people of Kerala and those who offered assistance to those in need across the globe, even though it does feel a little stretched out towards the conclusion.

The movie 2018 is touching. When the characters are saved, you feel relieved as well as for the characters since you feel trapped for them. A movie has achieved its goals if it can elicit such a wide range of emotions from the viewer.

Tovino Thomas stands out in a movie that features many exceptional actors. Lal and Asif Ali are also remarkable. Characters like Indrans, Naraein, Kunchako Boban, Aparna Balamurali, and others who received significant screen time had an influence.

Through their superb work, the directors Akhil George and Chaman Chacko, as well as the editors and VFX, helped the viewer comprehend the magnitude of the catastrophe.

The 2018 movie by director Jude Anthany Joseph serves as a reminder of the Kerala floods. Additionally, it serves as a reminder that humanity is still with us and that, when it comes to survival, unity counts. And this is the true Kerala Story.
